ATO credit card payments end after 30 November

Flor- Hanly - Tuesday, October 06, 2026

The ATO will stop accepting credit card payments after 30 November 2026, following the Reserve Bank’s review of card payment costs and surcharging.

The ATO says it does not consider it appropriate to pass credit card merchant fees on to the community.

The ATO acknowledges that some taxpayers rely on credit cards to manage tax payments and will support those experiencing financial hardship or difficulty meeting their obligations.

The Tax Office is also contacting taxpayers with payment plans linked to credit cards. If your plan uses a credit card, you’ll need to update your payment method before your next instalment due after 30 November.

Queensland will continue accepting credit cards for state tax payments

Queensland Revenue Office’s payment guidance confirms Visa and Mastercard remain available, with payments required to be more than $10 and less than $50,000. QRO also removed card surcharges from 1 October 2026.

For small businesses and farming operations using credit cards to manage BAS or income tax payments around seasonal income, now is the time to review your cash flow and payment arrangements.
